About this tool

The tip and bill calculator works out a tip, the total with tip, and each person’s share when a group splits the bill. It is useful at restaurants, for delivery and taxi tips, or when friends split the cost of a shared order.

How to use it

  1. Type the bill amount before tip in the Bill amount field.
  2. Enter the tip percentage. The field starts at 15 percent; change it to whatever is customary where you are.
  3. Enter how many people are sharing the bill. Leave it at 1 if you are paying alone.
  4. Choose Run tool. The tip, the total and the amount per person are shown together.

Screen-reader and keyboard tips

Results appear in a live region, so VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS and TalkBack read the answer as soon as it is ready without moving your focus. Press Tab to move between fields and Shift+Tab to go back. On an iPhone or iPad, swipe right with one finger to move through the form and double-tap to activate a button.

Questions and answers

Which currency does it use?

Results are formatted in US dollars. The maths is the same for any currency, so you can read the numbers as pesos, euros or any other currency.

Can I split unevenly?

This tool splits the total evenly. For uneven shares, use the percentage calculator to work out each person’s portion.

Does it round?

Amounts are shown to the cent. When paying cash, you may want to round the per-person share up.

Privacy

Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The calculation happens in your browser and disappears when you leave the page. Read the Privacy Policy for details.
