The file-name cleaner turns a messy working title such as “My Final Mix (Version 2).wav” into a safe, shareable file name like “my-final-mix-version-2.wav”. Clean names avoid problems with spaces, accents and symbols when files are emailed, uploaded or moved between computers.
How to use it
- Type or paste the original file name, including its extension.
- Choose a style: lowercase with hyphens, or lowercase with underscores.
- Choose Run tool and then Copy result.
Screen-reader and keyboard tips
Results appear in a live region, so VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS and TalkBack read the answer as soon as it is ready without moving your focus. Press Tab to move between fields and Shift+Tab to go back. On an iPhone or iPad, swipe right with one finger to move through the form and double-tap to activate a button.
- Accented letters are converted to plain letters, which prevents a screen reader from spelling out unusual characters.
- The file extension (such as .wav or .mp3) is kept and converted to lowercase.
Ways people use it
- Naming mixes, stems and masters before sending them to a collaborator.
- Preparing files for a distributor or website upload.
- Making file names easier to navigate with a screen reader.
Questions and answers
Does it rename my actual file?
No. It creates the new name as text; rename the file yourself in your file manager.
Why avoid spaces in file names?
Some systems and web links replace spaces with symbols such as %20, which makes names harder to read and share.
Privacy
Only the name you type is processed, and only in your browser. Read the Privacy Policy for details.
