Listening to ambient music without visuals

Ambient music is often described in visual terms — landscapes, colours, light. For an artist who has never seen, the vocabulary is different: rooms, distance, movement, texture and memory. That is a useful way for any listener to approach this side of the catalog.

Try this

Listen once on headphones and notice where sounds sit: left, right, close, far away. Movement in the stereo field often carries the structure of the piece.
Listen again on speakers in a quiet room, and notice how the music mixes with the space around you.
Pay attention to what repeats and what slowly changes. Small changes over a long repetition are where much of the emotion lives.
Try a long release, such as an album, without skipping. Ambient pieces often make more sense as part of a sequence.
